CHOOSING ORGANIC COTTON

CHOOSING ORGANIC COTTON

This month (June) we are collaborating with TOM Organic who make personal care products using ONLY organic cotton.  With every online order you will receive a sample pack of either maternity products or sanitary products.  As you probably realise by now if you are reading our journal, we care a lot about the ingredients we put on our skin or bring into our homes. So, we do choose organic where possible.  But why is it so important to choose organic cotton?

Cotton is considered one of the world’s dirtiest crops due to the large amounts of THE most hazardous pesticides being used in its farming.  Cotton takes up just 3% of the world’s cropland but consumes around 10% of the world’s pesticides.  And they are really nasty ones with names like aldicarb, phorate, methamidophos and endosulfan. Cotton pesticides are often broad spectrum organophosphates — pesticides originally developed as toxic nerve agents during World War II.

That’s why choosing to buy organic cotton really does make a difference – to your health and the health of our rivers and oceans where these chemicals end up.
