Petroleum-derived foaming agents in shampoo, body wash, hand wash and laundry detergent which can cause skin irritation, rashes and allergic reactions with links to organ toxicity and hormone disruption.

Look for: Sulphates.

Artificial colours can be found in personal care products and are derived from petroleum, coal tar or heavy metals. Can increase the risk of irritation, blocked pores, breakouts and sensitivity.

Look for: Synthetic or artificial colours

A preservative found in ‘natural’ products such as baby wipes, mouthwash, hand cream, makeup and cleaning products - reported to cause mild (sometimes severe) irritation of the skin.

Look for: Methylisothiazolinone, Methylchloroisothiazolinone

Used in a wide range of products as ‘fragrance’ or ‘parfum’. Derived from petrochemicals and known to cause skin irritation along with serious illness such as asthma, fertility issues and hormonal interference.

Look for: Fragrance or parfum

A well-known environmental toxin used for its anti-bacterial properties, often found in antiseptic cream, hand sanitiser, hand wash and toothpaste. Linked to skin irritation and interference with hormone function.

Look for: Triclosan

Used in personal care products such as shampoo, body wash and soap to make the ingredients softer on the skin. During their creation, products are contaminated with 1,4-dioxane - a well known human carcinogen.

Look for: PEG & ingredients ending in ‘-eth’

A synthetic preservative used to extend shelf-life in cosmetic products. Very toxic in high doses with the potential to cause damage to brain cells and the nervous system.

Look for: Phenoxyethanol

Quaternary Ammonium Compounds are used in fabric softener to make garments more plush. Known to trigger asthma attacks and are thought to interfere with our reproductive system.

Look for: Products advertised as anti-bacterial

Found in personal care products such as lipstick, foundation, hair care and sunscreen to give a ‘silky feel’. Shown to be detrimental to the environment, cause breakouts in the skin and dullness in the hair.

Look for: Dimethicone, Cyclopentasiloxane or Cyclotetrasiloxane

Found in personal care products such as nail polish and shampoo to help synthetic fragrance last longer. A well known endocrine disruptor, linked to obesity, birth defects, fertility issues and asthma.

Look for: Fragrance or ‘...phthalate’

Surfactants help water mix with oil and are the cleansing component of our formulations.They create a foaming effect, making it easier to clean surfaces and wash away impurities. We use naturally-derived surfactants in our products, such as lauryl glucoside, decyl glucoside,sodium cocoyl glutamate,capryl/caprylyl glucoside and coco glucoside.

We use natural moisturisers and thickeners in our products to give them a creamy, rich and indulgent texture, as well as being nourishing for the skin and hair. All these ingredients are naturally-derived including acacia senegal gum, xanthan gum, gluconolactone, glycerin, helianthus annuus seed oil, vitamin E, lactic acid, sorbitan olivate and saccharide isomerate.

Natural conditioners are used within our products to keep skin and hair soft, smooth and hydrated and improve overall texture. Examples of natural conditioners we use are banksia seed oil, cetearyl olivate, glyceryl stearate citrate, isoamyl laurate.

Enzymes are typically used within products to break down protein-based stains such as blood and milk. Different enzymes target different stains. We use naturally derived enzymes within our products, such as amylase, cellulase enzyme, cellulase enzyme, lipase and protease, which all work to break down protein-based stains naturally and effectively.

We use natural preservatives in our products for shelf stability and longevity, including glyceryl caprylate, potassium sorbate, propanediol, sodium anisate, sodium caproyl/lauroyl lactylate and sodium levulinate.

In some formulations we use synthetically derived (but naturally matched) food-grade preservatives to keep product shelf stable and prevent bacterial growth.When we do they comprise less than 1% of our formulations. This includes sodium benzoate and potassium sorbate, which are both approved by the Environmental Working Group (EWG).

We use natural stabilisers to extend the life of our products and maintain the highest product quality. Ingredients are mostly derived from coconut, olive and vegetable oils, such as cetyl alcohol, citric acid, sodium chloride, sodium olivate, sodium stearate, stearic acid.

Solvents are used within our products to enhance texture and consistency, improve efficacy, stabilise the formula and aid in cleansing. Some examples of natural solvents we use are alcohol and ethanol, which are derived from corn and sugar cane.
