7 ways to make your home smell good naturally

7 ways to make your home smell good naturally

We're strong believers in the power of scent to transform a space or experience. The fragrance of your home does more than greet you at the door — it sets the tone for how we feel.

Maintaining your home’s natural freshness can be challenging with the inevitable smells of everyday life — muddy dogs, kids' sports gear, endless cycles of washing... But there are plenty of simple techniques to keep your home smelling fresh using natural ingredients. We always advocate for more natural solutions - most commercial air fresheners contain ingredients that have been shown to disrupt hormones or negatively impact health.

So whether you’re in the mood for a spring reset or just want to freshen things up, these 7 simple tips will help make your home smell just as good as it looks.

1. Use a diffuser

One of the easiest and most natural ways to fragrance your home is with a Diffuser. Just a few drops of an Essential Oil and you can enjoy a long lasting aroma that fills a room. These oils not only smell divine but also offer therapeutic benefits that help to improve mood. Try scents like Tasmanian Pepper & Lavender to calm or Lemon Tea Tree & Mandarin to refresh and enliven.

2. Make a simmer pot

This was a recommendation from our resident Argentinian, Anabel. simmer pot (also known as a stovetop potpouri) is an old-fashioned but simple method to fragrance your home. Simply simmer a blend of herbs, fruits, spices or dried botanicals in a pot of water on the stove. The gentle heat releases their fragrance, infusing your home with a natural and comforting aroma. Tailor the ingredients to the season. For Spring/Summer, we love using fresh citrus (lemon, oranges, grapefruits), mint, eucalyptus leaves or lavender.

3. Keep windows open for cross ventilation

Whenever possible, open windows to circulate fresh air. Opening multiple windows allows for cross-ventilation, which helps to carry stale air out and bring in the fresh breeze.

4. Clean and empty bins regularly

Neglected rubbish bins are a common source of funky odours in the home. To prevent unwanted smells from lingering, ensure you empty your bins regularly and give them a thorough wipe down with a Bench Spray. You can also add a few drops of essential oil to the bottom of the bin before replacing the liner to help neutralise any odours.

5. Decorate with fresh cut botanicals

Spring is one of the best times to decorate your home with fresh plants  there's an abundance of native flora in bloom. Some of our favourite natives that are also beautifully fragrant include Lemon Myrtle (zesty and citrusy), Lemon-Scented Gum (crisp and refreshing), Boronia (sweet and floral). These botanicals bring the outdoors in while naturally purifying the air.

6. Use a Mist Spray to keep fabrics fresh

For an instant refresh, use a natural Mist Spray to freshen air and neutralise fabrics like curtains, pillows, and upholstery. They're a great way to quickly fragrance a space before guests arrive or to create a relaxing environment as you wind down from the day.

 7. Upgrade your washing

We often think of our clothes as separate from our home, but it’s all connected. The odours in our laundry or damp towels can easily transfer to sofas, bed linens, and other fabrics. Using a naturally scented Laundry Wash not only keeps your clothes fresh, but also helps maintain the overall scent of your home without overpowering synthetic fragrances.
